We provide 14 hours of tutor training for volunteers who want help adults learn English. Our tutors also help adults prepare for the GED, US citizenship or computer literacy.
The Mid-Valley Literacy Center offers the following community services:
1. Training of volunteer tutors (initial training plus on-going workshops covering relevant information for
tutors).
2. On-going educational consulting (for both new and existing MVLC tutors) with regard to
their respective tutoring sites.
3. Offering consultation and guidance to tutors with respect to the appropriate selection of program
books, materials and curriculum.
4. Administering diagnostic and language assessment services for adult students
5. Accommodating ELL's with assistance in the transition process toward attaining admission
to appropriate community college programs.
6. Networking with community partners.
The Mid-Valley Literacy Center's trained volunteer tutors provide instruction in the following areas:
1. English classes for ELL's to improve their conversational English skills, including both reading and
writing in English.
2. English or Spanish GED preparation (covers Reading/Literature, Writing/English Composition, Social
Studies, Science, and Math.)
3. Computer skills (includes keyboarding and a basic introduction to computers)
4. Citizenship preparation classes.
5. Pre-CNA classes emphasize English and medical terminology in preparation for future Sheltered
English CNA classes. They are offered in partnership with Providence Benedictine Nursing Center in Mt.
Angel, Oregon.
6. Spanish classes for native English speakers.
Classes continue for approximately three-month terms, following the same term dates as local colleges
